Inside the city, Tennessee American Water draws from the Tennessee River and treats it at the Citico plant. Its 2025 report puts total hardness at an average of 76 ppm, about 4.4 grains per gallon. Some suburban Hamilton County addresses may be on a separate utility district.

PFOA and PFOS were not detected in any of four quarterly samples taken in 2024. Two other PFAS, PFBS and PFBA, were detected; neither has its own EPA limit. The EPA's PFOA and PFOS limits phase in over the next several years. In an exam room or waiting area, a point-of-use cooler is the last filter before the cup, and RO models are designed to reduce PFAS.
